Love Breaking Through Chapter 3

The header and author’s notes have been posted in the first bits.

Author’s Notes2: The song being used is Hurt by Christina Aguilera.

Valera stopped Ryan from leaving her lab with a touch of her hand on his arm.

“What has he done now?” she softly asked.

“I don’t know what you mean,” Ryan said, trying to deny the truth so clearly written in Valera’s dark eyes.

“I saw you leave H’s office and you looked like a kicked puppy,” Valera explained. She was concerned for her friend. She was the only one besides Alexx who knew of his feelings for Horatio. “So, what did he do this time?”

“Max,” Ryan said softly. He wasn’t in the mood to discuss how much it hurt to constantly be treated as a whipping boy.

Valera sighed. She hated to see Ryan look so forlorn, so lonely. She pulled him into a brief, but fierce hug. “Horatio Caine is an ass,” she whispered into Ryan’s ear before letting him go.

Ryan smiled his thanks and took his results to the layout room.

Horatio hung back in the shadows. He had paused in his struggle with his In-box when he had run out of coffee. He had left his office to go see if there was any in the break room. He paused outside of DNA when he saw Valera give Ryan a quick hug, and for the first time he was actually jealous of a woman.

The part of him that cared for Ryan had wanted him to go in there and pull Ryan away from Valera. It had wanted him to show Ryan who he really belonged to, but Horatio had reigned it in.

With a sigh of resignation, Horatio shook himself out of his reverie and continued on to the break room. He had a mountain of paperwork to finish before lunchtime.

Sara had been sitting at the bar when Horatio had arrived. She studied his body language and was concerned by how he was holding himself, as if one more burden was dropped on his shoulders he would collapse under the strain.

She joined him just as Mama Rosenelli came out of the kitchen and tutted at him in a mixture of English and Italian. She watched him charm the older woman, who then returned to the kitchen singing.

“You got a flair there, pal,” she told him.

“If you say so,” he murmured before placing a quick peck on her cheek in greeting. He slipped his sunglasses into his shirt pocket so he could take her arm and guide her through the main dining room to the patio. “You alright with eating outside?”

“That would be lovely. I get tired of being cooped up all day long.”

“Well, you could always go for outdoor therapy sessions,” Horatio suggested as he seated her at their table.

Sara rolled her eyes at him. “My clients would either be arrested for indecent exposure or some porn director would be filming them for his next big feature.”

Horatio chuckled at the hint of exasperation he heard in her voice. Some days having a sex therapist as a friend was better entertainment than a Hollywood blockbuster.

They ordered with Horatio picking a nice, fruity, white wine from the wine list. This bothered Sara because Horatio never drank during the day, especially if he had to go back to the lab.

She kept her curiosity and concern under control as they discussed safe topics like sports and the weather. When their food arrived she watched in dismay as Horatio took a few bites and then pushed it around his plate as he sat lost in his own little world.

Horatio felt Sara’s eyes on him. He knew it was only a matter of time before she got down to brass tacks.

“Alright,” she sighed, breaking the companionable silence between them. “Spill it mister.”

“Spill?” Horatio inquired with an amused smirk twisting his lips. “Is that how you get your clients to open up to you, Sara?”

“I’m kinder to my clients,” Sara admitted with a grin. She took a sip from her glass of wine.

“I believe it.”

“So…” Horatio mimicked. “What?”

“Other than turning fifty, what is bothering you?”

Horatio delayed the inevitable by taking a large sip of wine. It was a nice white which complimented his meal, but even it left a bitter taste in his mouth. “I’ve got more wrinkles than I do freckles.”

“Not a chance, so try again.”

“I’ve got a lot of unfinished paperwork sitting on my desk.”

“Has never bothered you before,” Sara countered. She was determined to get to the bottom of Horatio’s odd behavior, even if it killed her.

“I’m tired of waking up alone,” Horatio whispered.

“What was that?” Sara had heard him. It made her sad. She loved Horatio as a friend and wanted nothing but the best for him, especially since he had returned from Rio a shell of his former self.

“If I were to look up the word relentless, would I find your picture next to it?” Horatio asked, silently praying that Sara hadn’t heard his whispered confession.

Horatio let out a tired sigh of resignation. “I have unresolved feelings for a co-worker,” he finally admitted the truth. It didn’t make him feel any better.

“Ryan Wolfe,” Sara immediately deduced. Her suspicions were confirmed when she saw Horatio wince at the mention of Ryan’s name.

“Nothing against Calleigh, but you treat her more like a kid sister than a possible love interest,” Sara told him reminding him of how well she knew him.

“Hmmm…” Horatio murmured. “It could be Eric.”

Sara shook her head. Horatio was playing the deflection game and it annoyed her. “Would you have married Marisol if you had had feelings for Eric?”

“No,” Horatio honestly replied. “It could be Frank I’m lusting after.”

“That’s highly unlikely since he’s mine,” Sara retorted.

“I think he would have something to say about that.” Horatio knew Frank and Sara had been seeing each other for several months, but he was doubly certain that he didn’t need the details.

“He’d be smart to tow the line, if he doesn’t want cut off,” Sara countered.

Horatio blushed and muttered, “Too much information, Sara.”

“You’re so pretty when you blush.”

“Sara,” Horatio growled.

Sara laughed. She knew Horatio was far from being truly embarrassed. She just got a kick out of teasing him when he did blush because his fair skin made it more transparent.

Horatio rolled his eyes.

Horatio escorted Sara to her car. He let her pull him into a hug.

“Do yourself a favor,” she told him. “Tell Ryan how you feel before you lose him.”

“Lose him?” The very thought froze the blood in Horatio’s veins. It was something that didn’t bear thinking about, but he had to in order to keep it from happening. “What makes you say that?”

“It’s obvious that Ryan has feelings for you,” Sara pointed out.

“It is?” This thought gave Horatio hope. “Is it really?”

“Yes, it is and if you don’t do something about it and soon,” Sara bluntly told him. “Somebody is going to steal him away.”

Horatio shook his head unable to picture Ryan dating somebody else. It reminded him too much of what he had gone through with Speed. It wasn’t something he cared to repeat.

“I know you’ve been under a lot of pressure of late, Horatio, but think back and you’ll see what I’ve seen,” Sara advised, pulling him out of his negative thoughts. “Now, I’ll see you at the barbeque on Saturday.”

Horatio bid Sara goodbye. He slipped into the Hummer and started it forgetting he had left the radio on. It was set on a station that played current music plus Golden Oldies.

He leaned back in the seat basking in the warmth it exuded. He wasn’t ready to return to the lab, so he listened to a few songs.

Ten minutes later, he reached out to turn off the radio. He stayed his hand as the intro of the dj’s next choice really caught his attention.

Seems like it was yesterday when I saw your face
You told me how proud you were, but I walked away
If only I knew what I know today
Ooh, ooh

Memories of Speed flooded Horatio’s mind and for once he didn’t stop them. He had walked away from the young man when Speed had started seeing Eric. It hurt too much to be near him and not have him.

I would hold you in my arms
I would take the pain away
Thank you for all you've done
Forgive all your mistakes
There's nothing I wouldn't do
To hear your voice again
Sometimes I wanna call you
But I know you won't be there

Ohh I'm sorry for blaming you
For everything I just couldn't do
And I've hurt myself by hurting you

Tears sprang into Horatio’s eyes and ran down his cheeks unchecked. Some days he missed Speed so much that he wasn’t certain that he could walk in the lab and not see him there. Not see him in Trace working on evidence, not teasing Eric about his poor choice of music, not annoying Calleigh with his indifference to guns, not seeing Alexx nag at him to eat more.

On those days, he suddenly realized he was extra hard on Ryan. This shamed him because he always prided himself on being impartial.

//Impartiality is good for solving cases,// he told himself. //But not for resolving pent up sexual tension.//

Some days I feel broke inside but I won't admit
Sometimes I just wanna hide 'cause it's you I miss
And it's so hard to say goodbye
When it comes to this, oooh

Would you tell me I was wrong?
Would you help me understand?
Are you looking down upon me?
Are you proud of who I am?

Horatio listened to the rest of the song. He replayed the last few months in his mind recalling what Sara said about Ryan having feelings for him. Several instances came to mind that revealed Ryan’s true feelings.

He had hurt Ryan by marrying Marisol. He had continued to hurt the younger man by keeping his distance from him as they both searched for the mole. But his worst infraction to date was constantly referring to Ryan as Mr. Wolfe and not Ryan.

Horatio vowed to change that. If he could address the other members of his team by their Christian names….hell, he even dared to call Frank Francis one day…it was the least he could for Ryan.

There's nothing I wouldn't do
To have just one more chance
To look into your eyes
And see you looking back

Ohh I'm sorry for blaming you
For everything I just couldn't do
And I've hurt myself, ohh

If I had just one more day
I would tell you how much that I've missed you
Since you've been away
Ooh, it's dangerous
It's so out of line
To try and turn back time

I'm sorry for blaming you
For everything I just couldn't do
And I've hurt myself by hurting you

The song ended and Horatio wiped the tears from his cheeks. He turned off the radio. He pulled the Hummer into traffic and returned to the lab.

He had a long overdue confession to make.

I have to confess that I have trouble with H and Ryan...I don't know why, its just something in my head.

But your style and your story have both intrigued me with this and find myself eagerly awaiting what is to come...

Keep up the good work ladies!!

Hooray, for Horatio/Ryan! They are my OTP, but sadly nearly nobody else thinks so too.

You rock so much for writing this!

Oh, this is great. The conversation between Horatio and Sara was so humoruos. Normally I prefer a Horatio/Speed pairing, but Speed is dead for a long time and life is going on, isn't it? I'm waiting for the next chapters.
